Seeing Progress Through Practice – FREEBIE
Developing Skills Boosts Confidence
I have found that no matter the age of my piano students, they seem to learn and grow as individuals as they develop musical skills. I have watched as shy, quiet, and frustrated children turn into radiant, smiling and accomplished pianists after bowing to an applauding audience at a recital.
The consistency and effort that piano practice requires helps students experience change and growth that can be applied to all areas of life. A child who is driven to succeed in music lessons can drive themselves to success and achievement at school, in their future careers and relationships, and at home among their family.
Confidence is Infectious
People are seriously funny creatures. It seems that our potential is only limited by what we tell ourselves. Teaching children a healthy variety of skills–like music–from an early age can help them see that through their efforts, they can accomplish anything. It is confidence like this that builds upon itself as we learn new things and leads us to greater things than we currently couldn’t dream of.
How to Boost Student Confidence
Mastering anything–piano included–doesn’t happen overnight. It takes years of consistency to play advanced music, and the required daily consistency can be a stumbling block for students and children who can’t see their own progress. Often times, when confronted with a difficult assignment, children have a difficult time seeing the forest for the trees.
I have a unique solution that can help with this phenomenon. When piano students first come home from class, parents should record how they sound when they practice their assignment. After the student has practiced consistently and dutifully through the week, record them again and let them hear the difference.
Reinforcing Student Confidence
While the assignment may not be mastered in one week’s time, I am confident that you and your child will hear the progress they have made by listening to the two recordings. Be genuine and encouraging when you point out improvements that you hear in their assignment. I promise this technique will pay dividends in motivating your piano student to practice and will boost their confidence in tackling the assignment they get from their next piano lesson.
